Those differences show up in the design. A Wingfield yard shares fence lines with neighbours whose own security is unknown; an Edinburgh Parks facility might have two hundred metres of frontage and a single gatehouse; a Lonsdale workshop needs hardware rated for coastal exposure that would be wasted money inland. We design from the estate and the block, not from an industrial template.
For many industrial operators the shed is the easy part — it's the yard that bleeds. Vehicles, trailers, stillages, drums and stacked materials sit outside in the open because that's where they belong operationally, protected by a chain-link fence that announces the boundary without enforcing it. Yard security starts with an honest map of what actually sits outside overnight and what it would cost to lose.
The gate is the yard's pressure point. Everything that leaves on wheels leaves through it, so gate coverage that reliably captures vehicles, plates and drivers — at night, in headlight glare — earns its position on every industrial design we do. Behind the gate, yard coverage works best in layers: cameras positioned to see along fence lines rather than just across open ground, lighting that removes the dark storage rows, and detection that notices a person in the yard before anything reaches the shed wall.
Industrial theft is unglamorous and specific. Diesel siphoned from trucks and plant parked over a weekend. Hand and power tools that walk from unlocked site boxes and utes. Copper — cable off spools, offcuts from bins, and stripped from equipment left accessible. Batteries, trailers and attachments that roll away on the thief's own wheels. None of it makes news; all of it compounds across a year.
Each of those losses has a design answer. Fuel theft argues for coverage and lighting over the parking rows where vehicles actually sit, not just the gate. Tool loss argues for the stores cage going onto a recorded, credentialed door. Copper and materials argue for the scrap and cable storage areas being treated as high-value zones rather than back-corner clutter. The pattern of what a site loses tells us what the system needs to watch — so we start every industrial design by asking.
After the last ute leaves, an industrial estate offers an intruder the two things they value most: time and privacy. No passing trade, no neighbours at home, no reason for anyone legitimate to be on the street. Security for these hours can't depend on a passer-by noticing something wrong — it has to be a monitored system that detects intrusion early and reports it to people who act.
We build the after-hours posture in layers: perimeter and yard detection for the earliest possible warning, interior detection suited to high-roofed volumes where domestic sensors misbehave, and back-to-base monitoring with dual-path signalling so a cut connection is itself an alert. Around it sits the operational discipline — arming schedules that match real shift patterns, named user codes, and open-and-close reporting — because on an empty estate, knowing the site actually got armed at 6pm is half the battle.
Industrial yards at night are hard on ordinary cameras: big distances, patchy lighting, headlight flare at the gate and true darkness along the back fence. Two tools change the picture. Genuine low-light camera performance — specified from real capability rather than brochure optimism — keeps identification possible in the lit zones. Thermal imaging covers the unlit ones, detecting the heat signature of a person against a cold fence line at ranges where a conventional camera sees nothing.
Thermal isn't an everything answer — it detects presence superbly but doesn't identify faces, so it pairs with conventional cameras rather than replacing them: thermal to know someone is in the yard, conventional to know who, once they reach the lit approaches. For large parcels at Edinburgh Parks or long Wingfield boundaries, that pairing covers ground that would otherwise demand a floodlit perimeter, and we'll tell you honestly whether your site is one where it earns its cost.
